Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

~Leviticus 18:22,  King James Version

Twelve words in a centuries old , much-translated old testament code that is the most quoted basis for homophobia in conservative Christian circles today.

“Homosexuality is disgusting and sinful………………….it says so right there in the bible!”

“I am perfectly justified when I harangue and harass gay teens into suicide……..Leviticus says they are to be abhorred, and you cannot deny me my first amendment religious freedoms!”

“The Far Left is trying to bully innocent Christians who do not accept their homosexual agenda or lifestyle into silence, and we are simply defending ourselves from their wicked influence.”

“If you grant homosexuals special rights, next you will have incest and bestiality and the total destruction of the moral fabric of America.”

“God hates Fags.”

Dan Savage has never been one to coddle his audiences or play to religious sensibilities, and he certainly did not stray from form when he gave the keynote address at the  JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Seattle, Washington two weeks ago. The topic was bullying and biblical rationalization. Some have criticized Savage’s topic by saying it had nothing to do with journalism and was inappropriate for high school students  – I think it was perfectly suited. With the rash of  peer-torture induced suicides across the country and the proliferation of  “don’t say gay”  and “bullying as protected religious speech” legislation being introduced in many states and the increased media attention they are receiving, it was the PERFECT topic for high school journalists to hear about……………. and who better to discuss it than Dan Savage, whose “It Gets Better Project” has been a lifeline for tortured teens and adults alike?

His remarks were bold, truthful,  and thought-provoking………..for those who are inclined to listen ,and those inclined to think.

“The bible says that if your daughter’s not a virgin – if a woman is not a virgin on her wedding night she shall be dragged to her father’s doorstep and stoned to death.

Callista Gingrich lives.

~Dan Savage, illustrating the hypocrisy of using the bible to justify homophobia and anti-gay legislation in the guise of Christian religious faithfulness

Students walked out when Savage utter the line

People often point out that they can’t help it, they can’t help with the anti-gay bullying, because it says right there in Leviticus, it says right there in Timothy, it says right there in Romans that being gay is wrong. We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people,

and I can understand young, impressionable minds taking it as an attack on their religion at first blush. Could he have said it “better”, taking into account their high school age? Probably. Have most of the kids utter the word “bullshit” themselves a time or two in their lifetimes? Probably.

But had they stayed and truly LISTENED to what Dan Savage was saying, they would have understood  his intent, and might have taken an eye-opening look at their own attitudes and rationales for the continued discrimination against gays. Students continued to trickle out as he spoke about the moral disconnect people have when dealing with the bible’s attitudes about slavery and its attitudes about homosexuality, and how people respond to each today, prompting him to quip

“It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansy-ass people react when you push back.”

Some students can be seen with visible smirks on their faces as they file past the camera, and truth be told, those students would probably not have been receptive to Savage’s  message even if he had left out the offending last line and previous curse word………………… and the reactions of their parents, captured as only the howler monkeys of Brietbart.com know how, offers some confirmation of that.

“The attitude of the conference coordinators was as disturbing as Dan Savage’s,” he says. “They reportedly said that as journalists the kids should have been able to sit there and take it all in. They felt the only thing that they had failed at was to not clearly tell the attending schools about Dan Savage. If they had to warn the schools, why would they let him speak? ~snip~“This puke felt at ease enough to speak like that in front of a little girl. What a pig.”

~Philip Naman, father of two attendees who walked out during Savage’s address.

*****Obvious Parenting Fail Note From the Negress:
If my wannabe-journalist child is attending a journalism conference, I would expect them, if they are not personally aware of the background of the keynote speaker, to perhaps read the promotional materials and , I don’t know, get off Twitter and Formspring and maybe act like a wannabe-journalist and perhaps use a little thing called GOOGLE. And as a parent who is giving my child permission to go, I THINK I WOULD DO SO, ALSO.

End Obvious Parenting Fail Note From the Negress.*****

I wonder if any of those smirking children would be horrified if you suggested that America should bring back slavery, as it was looked upon favorably in the bible?

Turns out all that slave-owning and slave beating wasn’t all that bad biblically, so long as you didn’t outright beat your slave to death on the spot. According to Exodus, if you beat them into a coma and they died a few days later, no harm, no foul – that’s just defective property!

Exodus 21:20-21 says  “And if a man beats his male or female servant with a rod so that he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished. Not withstanding if he remains alive a day or two he shall not be punished for he is his property.”.

I do not know anyone ( at least I hope I don’t – I guess I’ll find out later on when I post this Savage clip on my personal Book of Faces page)  who thinks slavery is an acceptable practice today. I also do not know anyone who thinks divorce should be totally forbidden.  I know lots of  devout Christians who enjoy the TV ministries of Joyce Meyer and Marilyn Hickey.  I know a lot who LOVE Shrimp Fest at Red Lobster, have pierced ears, tattoos, and wear poly cotton blend clothes.  I know more than a few who could care less if “Aunt Flo” has come to visit when they’re feeling frisky, enjoy the use of sex toys, and don’t have sex purely for procreative purposes. I don’t know any Christians who have NEVER worked on the Sabbath or ingested pork. Most everyone I know either enjoys playing a little backyard football or watching it on TV. And everyone I know enjoys watching TV or going to the movies…..which often involves actors who may be married (but most often not to each other) holding , kissing, and simulating sexual acts with people they are not married to or otherwise involved with………..all of which raises the point that Savage so bluntly made:

If we can admit that the bible holds some antiquated ideas about human morality, sexuality and behavior that are not worth sticking to in this modern age, how can we be so sure that the bible is not antiquated and flat out wrong about homosexuality? How can we take the Old Testament’s few widely interpreted admonishments over the New Testament, where Jesus himself , the inspiration for Christianity, says nothing at all about it?

And if you are willing to stick steadfastly by the code of Leviticus in regards to homosexuality, how closely are you sticking to the REST of it?

Here’s a sample of how you should be living if Leviticus REALLY means that much to you:

(15:19) If a woman have an issue, and her issue… be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean.”

Have a Happy Period, my ass.

(15:32-33)  This is the law of him that hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him And of her that is sick of her flowers, and of him that hath an issue, of the man, and of the woman, and of him that lieth with her that is unclean.”

Quit choking your chicken, no pearl necklaces, and  you menstruating ladies?

(19:31) Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards”

You’re burning in hell for those John Edward readings and Sigfried and Roy shows.

(19:27) “Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.”
Bieber cuts are Satanic.

(19:19)”Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.”

Incest is a must for your cattle, keep your crops segregated, and don’t be mixing those fabulous fabrics.

(20:10)”The adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”

There goes that Callista Gingrich thing again.

(20:9) “For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.”

Based on my thoroughly shitty relationship with my mother in the Teen Years, I probably should have been put to death at least once a week.

Biblically speaking, how are you holding up the other tenets beside the “Hate on the Homos” ones?

Are you stoning  non virgins on their wedding nights?

Are you beating your children with rods? Are you executing them when they don’t obey?

Are you telling women to shut up in church?

Are you shunning the handicapped?

Are you sticking with the contracts you enter, even when they turn sucky?

Do you avoid paying homage to idols (Pledge of Allegiance, anyone???)

The people who toss Leviticus in particular and the bible in general out as the last word on Why It’s OK to Drive Gay Teenagers to Suicide and Why It’s OK to Discriminate Against Gays in the MIlitary and Why It’s OK  to Deny Gays the Right to Be Married or Civily Unioned really need to take a long look in the Mirror of Biblical Adherence and repeat these words:

Mirror, mirror

On the wall -

Who’s the the biggest Hypocrite of all?

Dressing up evil behavior with biblical trappings doesn’t make the behavior any less evil……..it just makes the perpetrator feel pretty while being an ugly, un -Christ-like, violent, malevolent douchebag.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m no biblical scholar.

But speaking just for me,  I don’t think you can take a book that has been translated and re-translated and changed to fit the whims of Kings like James as the pure and literal word of God. I think you can use some of it as a good guideline on how to behave, and you can chuck a lot of it on the “dude, don’t EVER behave like these barbaric douchebags” pile.

Stick with the Golden Rule, and like the Negress says, “Don’t Be a Douchebag.”
I could be wrong, but I think that’s WJWD.

Again, a really excellent post. I really liked the connections you made between misinterpreted biblical quotes and quotes of people who defend such bigotry and hatred.

I feel bad for young students who are imprisoned by religion. I’m guessing they sensed what might be coming up in his speech – that there are a lot of incorrect things in holy books because they were written by humans and not the great, powerful Oz. Religion should be the first place where you begin to rebel and think for yourself.

Although I don’t know anyone who actually says it might be okay if slavery were to return, there are politicians who do all but say it. It’s perfectly okay to gut funding for public education and leave so many people without any options – that’s enslavement – of the mind.

What a fantastic assesment of the GOP mindset., emdoyle – you have hit that nail squarely on its head. :(
Idiocracy will be the death of us all.

The key here is that nobody ever reads the fucking Bible, so they have no fucking clue what’s in it. Whack job leaders can come out and say -without really lying- “the Bible says this about gays”.

However, nobody tells them about all the other stuff in the Bible, stuff that would impact their lives or wind up with them getting stoned to death.

For example….Rich Man Vs The Camel in the “Which one can pass through the eye of the needle to get into Heaven” competition.

    Jon sent me…

My personal favourite, which a fair number of nutbas seem to miss, is Numbers 25. It’s too long to quote here, but basically the story goes that God is about to hit His Chosen People (again) with a plague, when the priest sees a member of the tribe walk into his tent with his wife – a local. So a warrior, Phineas, picks up his javelin, follows them into the tent, and kills them both. Hence he spares the tribe from the plague by killing a mixed race couple.

Gotta keep them races pure, you know?

      Welcome, Fnerb!
Phineas has been snoozin’ on the job…..the hubs and I are just plaguing the HELL out of the place here. :)
Saw a great post on the Book of Faces today from Surly Thor where a pro-life commenter said ” What God are you thanking because mine would NEVER SUPPORT THE MURDER OF CHILDREN in the name of convenience?!” and he replied “What God would support the murder of children? Yours. Remember the first born male children in Egypt?”
